Winter Holiday Bucket List

Blogmas 2017: 12 Days of Christmas

Day Nine

I’m really lucky to have grown up spending a lot of Christmasses away from Yorkshire, and away from the UK. Whilst there is no place like home (or my boyfriend’s home, which is where I am this year (our first Christmas together, eek!)) there are some amazing places out there that I would love to visit during Christmas time.

Here enter my Winter Holiday Bucket List…

New York, USA

I’m thinking Home Alone 2, The Holiday, Sex and the City. I fell in love with NYC this year, and I also love Christmas. Imagine being able to do your Christmas shopping in Bloomingdales, on 5th Avenue. I think I’d die and go to heaven inside Tiffany during Christmas time.

One advantage New York has over London for Christmas is that it does get cold and very wintery weather in NYC. I would get far more into the spirit of Christmas if it was actually cold all the time here. It’s starting to get milder, and we think it might be about 9 degrees celsius here on Christmas Day… boo! No White Christmas for us in 2017.

Cologne, Germany

One of my good friends’ parents live in Germany, and I have it on good authority that Cologne simply has to be on this list. I have been to Germany before and I really enjoyed it. It’s steeped in history, the buildings are all beautiful, the beer is top notch and, my favourite thing, it’s actually so clean. Like, everywhere. Absolute. Dream.

I’ve done Christmas Markets over here. These are all mostly inspired by German Christmas Markets. I enjoy our markets, so imagine how good the proper German traditional ones must be! Effy tells me the best market in Cologne is the dom, followed by the Heurmarkt.

I’m told the foodie must have is Langos, which is a Hungarian deep fried batter topped with herbs and sour cream. If that doesn’t sound for you, perhaps some Flammlachs – salmon cooked fresh on a wooden slab to give it a super smokey flavour. If you want something sweet, ask for Germknödel, which are sweet dumplings stuffed with damson compote and covered in butter and poppy seeds. I’m drooling just thinking about it… Where was I…

Walt Disney World Resort

Walt Disney World September 2014

I’m not even remotely sorry that this has made it into my top 3.

After some quick googling, yes, my favourite place in the entire world, Disney World, is in fact open over Christmas. I’ve seen it during Halloween. I’ve been to the Christmas shop in Disney Springs. I would fit right in at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. And at Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration. And also at Once Upon a Christmastime Parade.

I am getting carried away.

There is nowhere in the world as magical, and no time of year as magical. Combine the two and that’s surely got to be a winner.

  1. I would love to go to New York at this time of year to! I just wish it could snow here in England. Also, Disneyland would make this holiday just that bit more special. Good luck with your bucket-list xx
